Job Responsibilities

Special education teacher aides are responsible for providing 1 on 1 assistance to students in non-teaching capacity to assist students with social/emotional and learning difficulties in all school settings. Under the direction of the teacher, the aide will perform routine classroom duties including but not limited to monitoring students, managing records, materials, and equipment, collecting student data, carrying out modifications and accommodations such as behavior plans and testing accommodations.  Teacher aide is responsible for modeling appropriate social skills, facilitating social interaction, assisting with classroom work, and attending to student physical needs which may include assisting with student equipment, mobility, and toileting; other related duties as assigned.  Specific tasks will vary depending upon grade level and program assigned.

  • Greets visitors, ascertains their business, ensures appropriate safety protocols are taken before permitting/directing the individual(s) to the proper location;
  • Takes attendance and ensures the whereabouts for students that are on campus, but not in assigned classroom, issues passes to students who are late to class, and may escort or transport assigned students between classes within the school;
  • Oversees and monitors student behaviors, may act as liaison to raise issues/concerns to the attention of teachers, counselors, and/or administrators;
  • Collaborates and communicates regularly with staff and administration;
  • May occasionally perform clerical duties such as making photocopies and organizing documents; and other responsibilities as required.

This individual will be responsible for supervising small groups of students who struggle in the general learning environment and who attend school for a limited number of hours per day/days per week as an alternative to suspension. The individual will follow a structured plan for the students provided by the teachers and/or tutors. Responsibilities include monitoring student’s behavior, providing positive feedback, keeping students on task and redirecting students as necessary. This individual may be assigned other responsibilities in the classroom to support the program.

The work involves a variety of non-teaching duties, the supervision of students and student activities and maintaining a safe and respectful environment.  Student supervision takes place in a variety of settings and may include hallways/corridors, study halls, cafeteria, bus ports, and campus grounds, including playgrounds or common areas.  Responsibilities may include:

  • Greets visitors, ascertains their business, ensures appropriate safety protocols are taken before permitting/directing the individual(s) to the proper location;
  • Takes attendance and ensures the whereabouts for students that are on campus, but not in assigned classroom, issues passes to students who are late to class, and may escort or transport assigned students between classes within the school;
  • Oversees and monitors student behaviors, may act as liaison to raise issues/concerns to the attention of teachers, counselors, and/or administrators;
  • Collaborates and communicates regularly with staff and administration;
  • May occasionally perform clerical duties such as making photocopies and organizing documents; and other responsibilities as required.

Step 1 ($19.11/hr) – Step 5 ($21.63/hr)

Certifications/Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma (GED) and experience with youth desirable.  Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administration. Exhibit good judgement, mental alertness, tact and courtesy.  Physical condition commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.
