Job Responsibilities

Performs skilled service and maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and heavy automotive and mechanical equipment including but not limited to, trucks, tractors, and buses.  Repairs and replaces ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches, front/rear axles, motors, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, and shock absorbers.  Performs adjustments to steering mechanisms and wheels, tunes engines and sets timing, makes minor welding repairs to automotive equipment.  Must possess working knowledge and basic hand tools necessary to perform repairs on diesel and gasoline powered engines. If NOT yet 21 years of age at the time of hiring, must within six months after turning 21, possess a CDL-B license with a P and S endorsement and be able to pass DOT physical.  Performs NYSDOT mandated PM inspections on school buses.  May operate a school bus on assigned route, removal of snow/ice from buses, sidewalks, and parking lots, and additional responsibilities as assigned.

 

Compensation & Benefits

Step 1 ($25.49/hr) – Step 5 ($29.82/hr)

Certifications/Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma (GED) and three (3) years automotive repair experience with diesel and gasoline powered engines.  Thorough working knowledge of automotive repair methods, tools/materials, equipment, and terminology.  Ability to understand and carry out both verbal and written directions.  Exhibit good motor and hand/eye coordination, mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, thoroughness, good judgment, mental alertness, tact and courtesy.  Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administration. Physical condition commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.

Job Responsibilities

This position is responsible for the daily operation of a school bus for the safe and orderly transportation of student passengers on an assigned route.  Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and maintain the operational and cleanliness condition of the school bus, including complete safety inspections, both before and after each trip, reporting any operational defect to supervisor;
  • Maintains records of mileage, routes, times, and incidents;
  • Provide safe transportation of students;
  • Follows maps of routes and pick up/drop off points;
  • Informs and maintains the safe and orderly conduct of student passengers;
  • Follow all safety rules, transportation laws and regulations;
  • Must comply with all State, Federal, Agency, DMV, DOT, and NYS Education Department requirements;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

 

Compensation & Benefits

Substitute School Bus Driver $22.53/hr

Pre-service safety training and required refresher trainings

Opportunity for advancement to probationary School Bus Driver position, starting at Step 1 ($24.81/hr)

Certifications/Qualifications

Minimum age is 21. Qualified candidates: must possess high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (GED), complete a pre-employment background check, pass a NYS Education Department physical performance test and Department of Transportation 19A physical, and have a valid NYS driver’s license with ability to obtain NYS CDL-B license with P and S endorsements.

 

Must have good driving skills with demonstrated desire to learn. Good working knowledge of safe driving practices, traffic laws, and regulations.  Ability to operate a large vehicle under difficult driving and road conditions.  Ability to communicate with young individuals, command their respect, and carry out both verbal and written directions.  Exhibit good motor skills and hand/eye coordination, mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, thoroughness, good judgment, mental alertness, tact and courtesy.  Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administration. Physical condition commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.

Job Responsibilities

This position is responsible for assisting the school bus driver in maintaining order, safeguarding students and supervising the loading and unloading of buses.  Responsibilities include:

  • Inform and maintain the safe and orderly conduct of student passengers on a school bus while in transit;
  • May assist students with disabilities as defined in student’s individualized education program (IEP);
  • May tend to the special needs of a student based on their individual IEP;
  • Must comply with all State, Federal, Agency, and NYS Education Department requirements;
  • Must follow all safety rules and Transportation laws and regulations; and
  • Assists school bus driver as needed and other responsibilities as assigned.
