Position Summary

The Elementary School Principal serves as the instructional leader and chief administrator of the assigned elementary school, responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive, and academically rigorous learning environment. The Principal provides leadership in curriculum, instruction, assessment, employee supervision, student services, school operations, family engagement, and compliance with all applicable federal, New York State, and district regulations. The Principal ensures that all students achieve high levels of academic success while promoting equity, social-emotional well-being, and positive school culture.

The Principal collaborates with the Superintendent of Schools, members of the District Leadership and Support Team (DLST), academic administrators, and building leadership to support the effective and efficient provision of programs and services across all aspects of the elementary school that are aligned with the Profile of a Shenendehowa elementary student and the District’s values and beliefs.

 

Essential Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership

  • Provide vision and leadership to ensure high-quality instruction aligned with the New York State Learning Standards.

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school’s instructional programs, including MTSS/RTI, special education, ENL, and AIS services.

  • Supervise and evaluate instructional staff in accordance with Education Law, Commissioner’s Regulations, APPR requirements, and collective bargaining agreements.

  • Use student performance data and other metrics to inform instructional decision-making and school improvement initiatives.

  • Promote culturally responsive teaching practices and inclusive learning environments.

 

School Climate, Culture, and Student Support

  • Foster a positive, safe, respectful, and inclusive school climate that supports the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students.

  • Implement and enforce the district’s Code of Conduct and behavioral support systems.

  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, DASA, Title IX, and other student-related regulations.

  • Collaborate with counseling, social work, psychological, and support staff to address student needs.

 

Personnel Management

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate instructional and non-instructional staff.

  • Participate in recruitment, selection, onboarding, and retention of high-quality staff.

  • Promote ongoing professional learning aligned with district goals and student needs.

  • Ensure appropriate staff coverage, scheduling, and compliance with contractual obligations.

 

Family and Community Engagement

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with families, caregivers, and community stakeholders.

  • Encourage meaningful family engagement and partnerships that support student learning.

  • Serve as a liaison between the school, district administration, and community agencies.

 

School Operations and Management

  • Oversee daily school operations including scheduling, student attendance, transportation coordination, and safety procedures.

  • Develop and manage the school budget in collaboration with district leadership.

  • Ensure compliance with all district policies, administrative regulations, and applicable laws.

  • Implement emergency preparedness, safety drills, and crisis response protocols.

 

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with all New York State Education Department (NYSED) reporting and accountability requirements.

  • Maintain accurate records related to personnel, students, and school operations.

  • Participate in district leadership meetings, committees, and professional development.

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Valid New York State School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL) or New York State School Building Leader (SBL) or School Administrator/Supervisor (SAS) certification

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or related field

  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful educational leadership experience as principal, assistant principal, or similar role

  • Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership and staff supervision

Preferred

  • Prior experience as an assistant principal or building-level administrator

  • Experience working in diverse school communities

  • Strong background in data-driven decision-making and school improvement planning
