Behavior Specialist
1.0 FTE Probationary Position

Certifications/Qualifications

  • New York State (NYS) certified Special Education Teacher or School Psychologist;
    Board Certified Behavior Analyst may also be considered.
  • Thorough understanding of educational disabilities especially students with autism, developmental
    disabilities and emotional disabilities
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work with students in the elementary, middle school, and high school setting
  • Ability to work with both general and special education students
  • Ability to develop quality relationships with parents/legal guardians, students, school staff, and community partners

Key Responsibilities

  • Work directly with school staff, administrators, students, and families to develop class-wide and student-specific behavioral strategies and plans
  • Coaching staff in understanding the function of behavior and how to create class-wide and individual behavior plans including defining and measuring behavior, understanding principles of reinforcement, and teaching new behavior
  • Working directly with students to identify triggers and coping strategies and to develop management plans to support student progress monitoring of their implementation of strategies to reduce undesired behavior
  • Providing professional development to individual teachers, groups of teachers, and/or the entire staff on issues such as: crisis intervention, trauma-informed practices, and factors that can affect behavior regulation
  • Modeling appropriate response to student behavior through direct classroom support and intervention, as practicable
  • Support teams in completing functional behavior assessments and developing behavior intervention plans; this includes hypothesis development, defining target behavior, identifying appropriate data collection tools, observations, and recommendation
  • Train staff in the district-approved crisis intervention response program
  • Engage in on-going professional learning to increase knowledge and skills
  • Maintain knowledge of school district programs, current laws, regulations, school board policies and procedures, as well as emerging trends and current research
  • Will require flexibility in schedule to meet student needs including responding to continued student crisis when practicable
  • Other duties as assigned by the direct supervisor
