Director of Facilities I

District-Wide

8 hrs/day, 12 mos/year

Supervises:                  Maintenance & Grounds Personnel

 

Job Responsibilities

The administrative position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the District’s facilities department, including the leadership of safety protocols, efficient operations, and the proper maintenance of the buildings and grounds. Key responsibilities include:

  • Directing, assigning, and evaluating the work of maintenance and grounds personnel;
  • Overseeing and managing the department’s budget, purchasing, inventory, and work order systems;
  • Coordinating and maintaining the department’s safety program, including regular inspections, safety drills, and on-the-job training for proper equipment operation and maintenance to insure health and safety regulations;
  • Managing a preventative maintenance program for the upkeep of buildings, grounds, electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling systems, and equipment, ensuring safe operational conditions;
  • Planning routine inspections, documenting results, preparing reports and ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies, including the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Department of Health, Education Department, in accordance with prescribed maintenance and grounds practices,
  • Collaborating with the Director of Operations, Supervisors, and staff to maintain safe and proper working conditions across all district buildings and grounds, including snow removal, mowing, hedge trimming, playground maintenance, and upkeep of walkways, roadways, parking areas, and athletic fields;
  • Performing basic preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment, including electrical, plumbing and heating systems and overseeing small in-house asbestos abatement projects;
  • Troubleshooting equipment issues, including HVAC and electrical systems, and contacting contractors for non-routine repairs as necessary;
  • Conducting visual inspections of painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and other maintenance work performed by contractors or district personnel to ensure quality and completion standards are met;
  • Operating a variety of hand tools and motorized equipment related to building and grounds maintenance, including snowblowers, mowers, tractors, plow trucks, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, drills, and other essential tools.;
  • Reviewing capital projects, maintenance needs, grounds repair requirements in coordination with Supervisors and staff;
  • Contributing to a positive and collaborative work environment through effective communication, professionalism, and dependability; 
  • Interpreting and administering collective bargaining agreements in relation to facilities department processes and procedures; and
  • Performing additional responsibilities as required.

 

Compensation & Benefits 

Salary: $95,000 - $115,000/yr, commensurate with experience 

District Administrative Support Staff (DASS)

 

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited registered college or university;
  • Minimum of two years of leadership and supervisory experience in the field of school facilities management/maintenance, engineering, building construction, including but not limited to experience;
  • Must possess valid NYS driver’s license and certificates appropriate to the vehicles, equipment and/or machinery operated;
  • Solid knowledge of modern buildings and grounds maintenance and repair practices, including working experience in one or more of the skilled trades and the safe use and operation of related tools and equipment;  
  • Ability to plan and direct the work of subordinates, maintain data, records, and produce reports, as well as establish and maintain good working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administration. 

 

Personal Characteristics

Seeking an innovative, resourceful, and hardworking individual who is a collaborative team player.  The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of standard buildings and grounds maintenance methods, techniques, operations, and equipment repairs with proven ability to solve problems effectively. Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills are essential, along with the ability to stay current with industry trends and developments in the buildings and grounds field.  The individual must demonstrate sound judgment, mental alertness, and the ability to handle situations with tact and courtesy.
