Director of Environmental Health & Safety
District-Wide
8 hrs/day, 12 mos/year

Supervises:                 Security Personnel

 

Overview of Role

The Director of Environmental Health & Safety position directs operations and activities to provide a safe and secure learning and working environment for all students and staff within the school district. The position will look to develop consistent environmental health, safety, security and sustainability practices in all school district operations and facilities; foster a proactive safety culture through awareness, collaboration of district personnel, communication between departments, implementation of safe work practices and safety training; minimize injuries, illnesses and environmental consequences and oversee compliance with health, safety and environmental standards, codes, policy and regulations. Essential Duties Breakdown

Such responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, organize, coordinate and oversee the functions of environmental health & safety and emergency response in alignment with district policies and goals, including administration, planning, safety program management and safety-related budget development.
  • Develop policies and procedures and direct functions of the district's environmental health & safety compliance programs, including but not limited to being the LEA Designee for the District for Asbestos, drinking water safety protocols, Underground Storage Tanks, and chemical safety protocols for pool and other related areas.
  • Oversee school safety and security programs, including assisting with addressing needs identified in safety audits, training, scheduling, assessment and evaluation of campus security personnel, and collaboration with law enforcement and first responders.
  • Assists administration, faculty, staff and students by reviewing workplace conditions, particular in accordance with the Workplace Violence Prevention regulations. making recommendations for improvements, assisting in developing written procedures, and providing training on how to implement health and safety workplace practices. 
  • Prepares reports and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies including NYS Education Department, NYS Department of Labor, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, NYS Department of Health, Saratoga Public Health, and other applicable agencies.
  • Conducts inspections of properties to implement safety programs guided by law and regulations.
  • Serve as a liaison between school administration and regulatory agencies as needed or designated.

Compensation & Benefits 

Salary: $95,000 - $110,000/yr., commensurate with experience 

District Administrative Support Staff (DASS)

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited registered college or university in Environmental Health and Safety, Physical Sciences or closely related field and five (5) years management experience.   
  • Knowledge of Federal (e.g., EPA, OSHA, DOT), State (e.g., DOL, DOH, DEC, NYSED) and local environmental health & safety regulations. 
  • Experience in safety and security program administration and implementation, including extensive knowledge of Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) regulations and Incident Command Protocols.

  • Ability to plan and direct work for safety initiatives, maintain data, records, and produce reports, as well as establish and maintain good working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administration.
  • Experience in implementing health and safety programs in the K-12 school environment.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, district policies, building and department procedures. 
  • Strong sense of personal accountability to realize and maximize their full potential in fulfillment of applicable goals and objectives and related mandates.
  • Ability to embrace change, establish and maintain good working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administration. Exhibits good judgment, mental alertness, tact and courtesy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite required. 
  • Physical condition commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.
